The Volunteers of America of Minnesota Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Family Focused Therapeutic Services Program offers parent education, case management and support services to deaf and hard of hearing parents of pre-school age children who are considered at-risk for child abuse and neglect. Services include individualized parenting skills sessions, violence prevention, crisis intervention and prevention, information and resource referral, advocacy and educational support.
Most participants are referred to our program by Hennepin County social workers, child protection intake workers, schools and community agencies. When a parent is referred to our program, DHH Family Focused Therapeutic Services Program staff arrange for an initial intake screening and evaluation meeting to determine if the parent meets the admission criteria and would be a good fit for the program.
Admission Criteria:
· One parent in a family must be deaf or hard of hearing.
· The family must reside in Hennepin County.
· The family must have at least one child under the age of six who is at risk being maltreated due to a parent's level of effective parenting.
· The parent/family must be approved for services by Hennepin County.
The DHH Family Focused Therapeutic Services Program collaborates with other Volunteers of America of Minnesota Mental Health Clinic programs and other professionals to provide necessary services. Our Mental Health Clinic is a Minnesota Department of Human Services licensed Rule 29 Mental Health Clinic and is accredited by the Council on Accreditation. Additionally, we are a certified provider of Children’s Therapeutic Services and Support (CTSS) in several counties.
