Michael: Restoring Hope and a Future
Michael’s life had been consumed with alcohol, illegal drugs and poor choices. With a history of aggressive acts on others, he had appeared in court on multiple occasions and had been admitted to chemical treatment several times without success. Finally, Michael was ordered to Bar None Residential Treatment Services for treatment of his severe emotional and behavioral problems. He came to Bar None’s secure Lakeview Unit feeling depressed, hopeless and doubtful about his future.
Michael’s life was not always so difficult. He was an intelligent young man who had dabbled in web design with some success. Inside was a creative individual looking for a way to express himself. Michael dreamed of going to college and had requested admission information from several schools. However, because he had dropped out of high school and had a history of truancy, he didn’t think he’d ever be accepted.
Then one day, a bright light appeared at the end of a very dark tunnel for Michael. He was contacted by Full Sail College in Winter Park, Florida. Michael applied and was accepted. The only thing standing in his way was that he needed a high school diploma or GED.
In addition to providing specialized treatment services, the Bar None staff was eager to help Michael with transportation to Anoka Technical School to obtain his GED. With paperwork help from staff and family, Michael was able to obtain financial aid, student loans and identify a roommate to share living expenses. Michael was nearly ready to go to college to pursue his dream – a Bachelor of Science degree in computer animation.
Upon discharge from Bar None, the staff asked Michael if he had any advice for others who might be going through difficult times. He advised, “Don’t give up. I did everything I could to get where I am going now. Anything is possible.” With a grin, Michael added, “Now, I’m doing what I want to do.” “It takes work, but in the end it is the greatest feeling in the world to know you have accomplished your goal. People are happy with me and I am happy with me. A year ago, I would have never thought I would be in this position, but look at me now,” Michael proudly concluded.
