Services to Persons with Special Needs

Portland Home

Many Volunteers of America of Minnesota programs work with individuals over a long period of time to help them cope with very difficult issues. Our Services for Persons with Special Needs program often works with people for their entire lifetimes, ensuring an independent, happy, productive life for those men and women who may otherwise be cut off from the rest of the world because of developmental disabilities.

We not only help these individuals live – but also help them thrive. We offer them the opportunity to experience life by helping them develop living skills, encouraging their involvement in their communities, and encouraging them to work.

And it is through generous donations that we are able to offer programs that make a significant difference for the people living at our homes for persons with special needs – residences like our Portland Home.

In a quite neighborhood in St. Paul, the Portland Home offers residential supportive services to adults with developmental disabilities. People like Dean, whose love of cooking and dedication to his job at the bakery are shining examples of a life transformed from severe isolation to connection within the community.

With the help of our dedicated staff, Dean has been able to triumph over significant social and developmental barriers.  His story is a testament to the difference that can be made when the community wants self-reliance and quality of life for each of its members.
