SALT: Nature’s Call to the Inner-City Youth
|
Up early, packing all supplies they’d need to go on a ten day trip to northern Wisconsin, ten students and two teachers from our Service Adventure Learning Team (SALT) High School set out on an adventure that is new, exciting -- and a bit intimidating.
Many of the juniors and seniors have not been this far from home for this long -- or this deep into nature. They are accompanied by students they don’t know well and are definitely out of their comfort zone. It’s a perfect situation for growth. It’s what SALT does best.
Imagine a place that helps some of our most troubled youth, ones that we as a community worry won’t find their path. This place, this school, offers unique and enticing alternatives to the life that these inner-city students thought “would be” -- a life of teen parenthood, drugs, gangs, dropping out of school. But in nature, or with any of the adventures they experience as part of the academic environment at SALT, there is a quiet calling to a life that “could be.”
Through our partnership with the Minneapolis Public Schools and the generosity of corporate and individual donors, we are able to create a meaningful educational experience that changes lives at SALT.
Below are selected excerpts from assignments written by students during the June SALT trip to Manitowish, Wisconsin. The trip was made possible with the gifts from individuals.
