Volunteers of America of Minnesota Community Event: Operation Backpack 2008

Date/Time Commitment: This year's event will happen July - August 2008 Volunteer registration opens: July 1
You can purchase backpacks and fill them with grade-appropriate school supplies to help foster children and students attending our alternative schools by providing the tools essential for the start of the school year. A list of grade-appropriate school supplies and backpack sizes will be provided upon registering. Volunteers are asked to drop off all filled backpacks at the corporate office by approx. August 22, and staff will deliver them to the students.

Childcare during groups session that occur at our Mental Health Clinics location or in the home of a participant. Provide care for the children of program parents who do not have money for childcare so they can attend groups or services where childcare is not provided.

Date/Time Commitment: Mentors are asked to visit once per week, with one-hour minimum visits. You determine the day/time of each visit (various times/days available). Mentors are asked to give a one-year commitment.
Many Bar-None residents lack consistent role models, stability and a sense of familiarity in their ever-changing worlds. As a mentor, you can make a difference in the life of a child while having fun with your new friend!

Working with the classroom teacher, volunteers plan to either do individual tutoring of students or to work with various students during class work times. Many of the students in our K-6 school are behind academically and can benefit from extra support in reading and math. Our students are eager to learn and love to work 1-to-1 with volunteers.
