Volunteers of America of Minnesota Community Event: Operation Backpack 2008

Date/Time Commitment:	This year's event will happen July - August 2008 Volunteer registration opens: July 1
You can purchase backpacks and fill them with grade-appropriate school supplies to help foster children and students attending our alternative schools by providing the tools essential for the start of the school year. A list of grade-appropriate school supplies and backpack sizes will be provided upon registering. Volunteers are asked to drop off all filled backpacks at the corporate office by approx. August 22, and staff will deliver them to the students.

Volunteers of America of Minnesota Mental Health Clinics: Scholastic Books Organizer

Date/Time Commitment:	Clinic hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sorting and organizing the Scholastic books when shipments come in.

Date/Time Commitment:	Clinic hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Inventory all the resource materials for the Clinics and each therapist (books, articles, therapy tools, therapy equipment, games, etc.) and develop a resource directory/manual for staff to use.

Location:	Clinic locations or in the home of a participant: Anoka Clinic: 22426 St. Francis Blvd Anoka, MN 55303 OR Golden Valley Clinic: 5905 Golden Valley Road, Golden Valley, MN 55422
Date/Time Commitment:	Hours would fluctuate. Group programs are typically in the late afternoon and evenings.
Childcare during groups session that occur at our Mental Health Clinics location or in the home of a participant. Provide care for the children of program parents who do not have money for childcare so they can attend groups or services where childcare is not provided.

Volunteer mentors are needed to provide children and teens to assist with living skills, homework skills, etc.

Volunteers are needed to do planting and upkeep of campus gardening boxes, and seasonally replace plants and maintain an attractive look outside the building. Volunteers would coordinate with maintenance staff.

Volunteers of America of Minnesota Bar None Residential Treatment Services: Mentors
Location:	22426 St. Francis Boulevard, Anoka, Minnesota 55303
Date/Time Commitment:	Mentors are asked to visit once per week, with one-hour minimum visits. You determine the day/time of each visit (various times/days available). Mentors are asked to give a one-year commitment.
Many Bar-None residents lack consistent role models, stability and a sense of familiarity in their ever-changing worlds. As a mentor, you can make a difference in the life of a child while having fun with your new friend!

Location:	Foley, Minnesota
Date/Time Commitment:	Two times per year in the Spring and Fall.
Clean up trash on side of highway.

Location:	Southwest Senior Center, 3612 Bryant Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55409
Date/Time Commitment:	Monday – Friday Between 10 am – 1 pm (Times vary depending upon job)
Help is needed for the following jobs:Set tables (10 – 11)Help dish out and pack meals (11 am – 12:15)Serve and clean up meals (11:45 – 1 pm)Take phone reservations (10 am – 1 pm)

Volunteers of America of Minnesota: ElderRide: Scheduler

Date/Time Commitment:	Monday – Friday 9:30 am – Noon
ElderRide provides transportation for seniors to medical appointments, grocery shopping, senior dining, and more. The Scheduler will take phone calls from people requesting rides.

Volunteers of America of Minnesota: Southwest Center: Front Desk Receptionist
Location:	Southwest Center, 3612 Bryant Avenue South, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55409
Date/Time Commitment:	Monday – Friday 8 am – 10:15 am, 2 pm – 4 pm
Help at the front desk is needed in two-hour blocks. The job entails answering the phones, making copies, directing people to appropriate staff. This is a fun opportunity to interact with seniors from the community.

Volunteers of America of Minnesota: High School: Tutor for Reading, Writing or Math

Tutors are needed to help students one-on-one and to assist teachers in the classroom.

Volunteers of America of Minnesota: Stonebridge Community School: Classroom Volunteer/Tutor
Location:	Stonebridge Community School, 4 West Franklin Avenue, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55404
Date/Time Commitment:	Anytime from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, or 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. We prefer a commitment of at least one hour per week, but can work with other schedules
Working with the classroom teacher, volunteers plan to either do individual tutoring of students or to work with various students during class work times. Many of the students in our K-6 school are behind academically and can benefit from extra support in reading and math. Our students are eager to learn and love to work 1-to-1 with volunteers.
