Mrs. Tate was referred to our caregiver family consultant by the senior coordinator from Bethesda Hospital. Her husband had been released from the hospital after being diagnosed as terminally ill and in need of hospice. The hospital told her that the only hospice available would not accept her husband’s insurance.
They had no money, her husband was not eligible for Medicare, and they felt there was not enough time to apply for medical assistance. Through the efforts of the Volunteers of America Caregiver Services family consultant, Mrs. Tate was able to obtain a $500 grant from Catholic Charities for her husband’s care, as well as find a hospice center that would accept his medical insurance.
Mrs. Tate has expressed gratitude for the assistance given to her and her family by the Volunteers of America Caregiver Services consultant. She indicated that she feels much less overwhelmed having a knowledgeable person to help her find the resources she needs.
