Many students can “talk the talk” of change and progress, but “walking the walk” for many reasons, proves difficult.  However, it’s not difficult for Scott, a graduate of Volunteers of America High School in Minneapolis.  Scott is a rare individual who knows, speaks, and lives the connection between thought and action, philosophy and practice, words and deeds.

Scott’s background is not unusual for alternative students.  Scott moved around quite a bit, from state to state, city to city, address to address.  Along the way, he encountered difficulties and barriers to his success, both in his school choices and his personal choices, including homelessness and family turmoil.

What distinguished Scott throughout his time at Volunteers of America of Minnesota Secondary Alternative High School was his focus, values, and determination not only to advance his own prosperity and talents, but those of others.  Scott had a “civic” mind and heart and it showed in everything he did.  To find evidence of this, all anyone needed to do was be with him for a day and watch the reactions of others, especially students.  He constantly helped others by trying to redirect inappropriate or negative behaviors in the school community, or by meeting with teachers and advisors on initiatives for improving the school.

Scott has gone on to win national awards for his documentary work with Phillips Community Television and has done guest appearances on various nationally televised programs.  He is currently pursuing post-secondary education and a career in music production.
