Yusuf enrolled in the Volunteers of America of Minnesota Adult High School Diploma program in February 2006.  He quickly discovered that studying and passing the tests associated with earning a high school diploma took motivation, hard work and patience.

To study for the Minnesota Basic Standards Test, Yusuf’s teacher recommended that he brush up on his reading skills by reading at least one article from the newspaper each day.  She also suggested that Yusuf identify the main idea, facts and opinions, inferences, vocabulary words and the author’s purpose for each article.

Yusuf’s diligence and hard work paid off.  He received his diploma and plans to further his education by attending college.

Reflecting on his experience, Yusuf said, “I recognized that everything is possible if I work hard and motivate myself to accomplish the tasks I need to achieve.  No one is too old to learn and we have an opportunity in our hand.  Once you get started, you will realize how good education is for your life and you would continue until you achieve your goals.  I plan to further my education by going on to college.”
